Research work at university teaching departments of Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya (DAVV) has literally come to a standstill for the last one year. Thanks to the UGC that approved nearly Rs 7 crore under special assistance programmes (SAP) for seven teaching departments of the varsity, but did not release funds.
Apart from merely Rs 4 lakh for appointing research scholars in four teaching departments, the UGC is yet to disburse funds, thus stalling research work at the varsity. SAP coordinator at School of Economics, DAVV, Prof. Ganesh Kawadia, said, "Last financial year we did not get any funding from the UGC. Due to fund crunch, research work is obviously getting affected. We have informed the university administration about the problem."
UGC in last financial year released only contingency fund for School of Computer Sciences and School of Life Sciences. Sources said the commission is facing fund crunch due to which disbursal process at universities across the country has been affected. School of Chemical Sciences, School of Physics, School of Physical Education, School of Life Sciences, School of Education, School of Economics and School of Computer Science & IT were awarded SAP by UGC, approving their proposals for research in select thrust areas. The DAVV perhaps is the only university in the central India after Banaras Hindu University to have highest number of SAPs. BHU has over a dozen SAPs.
UGC approved a grant of Rs 4.30 crore under SAP scheme to the DAVV in the first presentation and later approved Rs 2.61 crore for three departments. School of Chemical Sciences was awarded SAP with a financial support of Rs 1.15 crore. The thrust areas of research approved for the department are theoretical and computational chemistry and synthetic chemistry. School of Physical Education has been awarded SAP with a financial support of Rs 96 lakh. School of Physics has been awarded SAP with a financial support of Rs 50 lakh.
